Good UX: Stories of Flow, Empathy, and Atmosphere

This session will seek to discuss the importance of music for people with Down Syndrome. Having done a great deal of interacting with people who have down syndrome, music is a great creative release and facilitator of joy. This session will involve a short introductory anecdote on the effects of bringing musical education and its effects on a large group of people with down syndrome, followed by a large group discussion on potential problems and insights from the group of people on how to overcome these.

Telling Stories with Data: Making Data Visualization Accessible

Data visualization is story telling with data. How do we make our stories accessible? Creating visualizations with accessibility in mind can improve data visualization and digital maps for everyone. This presentation will discuss ways in which data visualization and digital maps can be made more accessible by making specific design choices and digital tools that can assist in design. Data visualization and digital mapping will also be considered in the context of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 which provides standards for making web content accessible to people with disabilities. A short discussion and opportunity for sharing will follow the presentation.

Re/visions of Dis/Abililty: Service Learning, Art, and Accessibility in Practice

Wood Lane is a county agency that has provided support and assistance to Wood County, Ohio residents with disabilities for over 50 years. Lynn Whitney (BGSU Photography Chair) and her students joined in partnership, from 2014-2019, with Wood Lane residents. The results include pictures conceived, taken, and/or selected by the photography student and their Wood Lane partner. As a case study of service learning, community art engagement, and accessibility, this presentation will provide a look into Whitney’s course as a service-learning collaboration that changed and grew with the needs and desires of the human community.

Fun with Tables!

Come hear about the interesting (and frustrating) work of the MSU Libraries Digital Imaging Services (DIS) as they work with intricate, detailed, and often times nonsensical tables. These tables begin life as pages from analog items across various projects/subjects and after mediation, become a part of a maximally accessible PDF available online. Participants will learn tactics and tips to create screen reader user-friendly tables and gain a clearer understanding the pitfalls of working with born-analog materials. This presentation will cover the use of Abbyy FineReader Pro and Adobe Acrobat Pro.

Unprepared for the difficulties that awaited them, they abandoned their noble professions to dive into digital accessibility. They soon became faced with convincing administrators, educators, IT professionals, and staff that the future success of students lay in the hands of digital accessible content. On November 22nd, come listen to an educator and a nurse talk about how they harnessed their knowledge and careers to advocate for accessibility throughout higher education.
